Encouraging parents, scholarships setting Skeens up for career in business

Brady Skeens

From Athletics Spotlight - Winter 2016-17

Brady Skeens is using his basketball skills, important lessons from his parents and help from scholarships to earn his degree in business administration and move on in the field.

“Both of my parents are hard workers, and they’re always busy. They taught me those same things,” he said.

The junior guard from Lenexa, Kansas, came to Washburn University with a strong work ethic. He also has a supporting cast of coaches, teammates and School of Business professors. Combining basketball and academics has certainly kept him busy, and he plans to stay that way in the coming years as he wraps up his basketball career and moves to the next step.

“This summer, I’m going to try and get an internship and expand my experiences,” he said. “I’ll graduate in 2018, and then I plan to start working on my master’s. I love to stay busy.”

His basketball scholarship is giving Skeens opportunities he might not otherwise have.

“I just want to say thank you to those who give to athletic scholarships,” Skeens said. “You provide us a great opportunity to expand our knowledge and our athletic career. We have so many opportunities to excel after we leave Washburn. Many people might stop after high school because they don’t have the opportunity to pay for college. Scholarships really help a lot of people.”

Skeens’ mother, Joy (Benton) Skeens, bs ’85, was a Hall of Fame basketball player at Washburn from 1981-85 and is seventh in program history with 1,356 points. Knowledge of Washburn’s great basketball history, along with first-rate facilities – many of them supported by donors – made the choice to come to Washburn easy for Skeens.

“Our supporters know how crucial it is to have great facilities. That’s why we have so many talented athletes come through here,” Skeens said. “These people are willing to help us out, even if they don’t individually know us. It’s special to have people give back.”
