Legacy Scholarships

Scholarships can make the difference in students’ lives. They make college affordable. They allow students to focus more on their education and less on how they will pay for it. Established in 1944, Alumni Association legacy scholarships reward the children, spouses and other family members of alumni with beneficial scholarships. In 2023, over 100 students received more than $40,000 in scholarships for the 2023-24 school year.

The Alumni Legacy Scholarship application period for students attending Washburn during the 2024-25 academic year opens on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, and closes on Friday, December 1, 2023.

Scholarship Application Instructions

A complete scholarship application consists of 2 parts:

  • Submit an online application.
  • Finalized alumni association membership(s) for all students and legacy family members. Join now.
(All student applicants, including incoming students, must be student members of the Alumni Association as of December 1, 2023.)

All applications and memberships must be received by December 1, 2023, for consideration. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. See Further Criteria and FAQs for additional information.

Applicants must be Washburn alumni or legacy students. Full-time undergraduate students, graduate students, international students, and incoming first-year School of Law students who meet the criteria may apply.  Part-time students are not eligible to receive legacy scholarships. Scholarship awards are disbursed in two payments - one half in the fall and one half in the spring.

Note: Filing for assistance through Washburn’s Financial Aid Office or applying for general university academic scholarships does not constitute your application for an Alumni Association scholarship. You must file a separate online application through the Alumni Association.

Did You Know?

There are many ways to help fund legacy scholarships. A portion of Alumni Association membership dues, proceeds from the Washburn University license plate program and registration fees for Alumni Association events help fund the scholarships. You may also chose to make a gift directly to the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.
