Legacy Scholarship Criteria and FAQs

The Alumni Legacy Scholarship application period for students seeking aid for the 2024-25 academic year opens on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, and closes on Friday, December 1, 2023.

Applicants must read and meet the following criteria and complete the following instructions to be eligible for a Legacy Scholarship during the 2024-25 academic year. The application period for the 2025-26 academic year will open in fall 2024.

 

Criteria

  1. Applicants must be Washburn alumni or Washburn legacies. What is a legacy? An applicant is a legacy if they have a parent(s), sibling(s), grandparent(s), or a spouse who is either a graduate of or is attending Washburn University or Washburn Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech).

  2. Previous applicants must re-apply each year for the Alumni Legacy Scholarship.

  3. Undergraduate students (full-time and part-time), graduate students, international students and incoming 1L (Washburn Law) students who meet the scholarship criteria are invited to apply.

  4. All students must be current dues-paid members of the Alumni Association  to be eligible for the scholarship. The student membership rate is $10 per year. Membership must be finalized or renewed by the scholarship deadline, December 1, 2023.

  5. For scholarship eligibility, legacy student applicants must have an alumni parent(s), sibling(s), grandparent(s), or spouse who is also a current dues paid member of the Alumni Association unless deceased. Membership must be finalized or renewed by the scholarship deadline, December 1, 2023.

  6. College applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours at Washburn University. Part-time students enrolled in 6-11 credit hours are eligible to receive half the scholarship amount awarded to full time students.

  7. High school applicants must plan on enrolling at Washburn University or Washburn Tech for the fall 2024 semester.

  8. High school applicants must be seniors entering Washburn University as freshmen in the fall of 2024.

What is a legacy?

An applicant is a legacy if they have parent(s), stepparent(s), sibling(s), grandparent(s), or a spouse who is either a graduate of or attending Washburn University or Washburn Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech).

When is the final deadline for application and qualifying criteria submissions?

The deadline for scholarship criteria is Friday, Dec. 1, 2023. All application and alumni membership materials must be received by the scholarship deadline for consideration.

Can I apply through the Financial Aid office or through another avenue?

No. Applying for assistance through Washburn's Financial Aid Office or applying for general university academic scholarships DOES NOT constitute your application for an Alumni Association scholarship.

What should I expect after I submit?

You will receive a confirmation email upon submission which will verify receipt of your online application. Alumni Association staff will reach out to you to regarding your awardee status in May 2024.

When are awardees announced?

Scholarship awardees will receive an email confirmation by May 2024.

Does an application automatically equal a scholarship?

No. Submitting a scholarship application does not constitute a guarantee of receiving a scholarship. 

Can I re-apply next year?

Absolutely. Prior applicants are always encouraged to reapply for the following year’s program; we only ask that you resubmit all the necessary materials, in addition to renewing your alumni membership.

How are scholarship funds distributed?

2024-25 scholarships will be disbursed in two equal payments: one half in fall 2024 and one half in spring 2025.

Did You Know?

There are many ways to help fund legacy scholarships. A portion of Alumni Association membership dues, proceeds from the Washburn University license plate program and registration fees for Alumni Association events help fund the scholarships. You may also chose to make a gift directly to the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.
